Strengthen and Weaken Reasoning
Strengthen and weaken questions ask you to bring a new fact to an argument and decide whether it makes the author's conclusion more or less believable. This is one of the highest-yield skills in MCAT CARS Reasoning Beyond the Text: the passage lays out a claim and its support, the question hands you information that was never in the passage, and you must judge its effect. The skill turns on one idea — every argument rests on hidden assumptions, and the answer that strengthens or weakens is the one that props up or knocks out an assumption.
Strengthening and Weakening Claims
An answer strengthens an argument when it makes the conclusion more likely to follow from the premises; it weakens when it makes the conclusion less likely. Neither has to prove or disprove the conclusion outright — CARS asks which choice moves the needle most, not which settles the matter.
Attack (or defend) the assumption
Every argument quietly assumes a bridge between its evidence and its conclusion. The most powerful strengthener affirms that bridge; the most powerful weakener breaks it. So the first move on any strengthen/weaken item is to ask: what must be true for this conclusion to follow?
(1) Find the conclusion — the claim the author wants you to accept. (2) Find the evidence offered for it. (3) Name the assumption that links them. (4) A strengthener supports that assumption; a weakener denies it or offers a rival explanation.
Offer an alternative explanation for the evidence, show the sample is unrepresentative, expose a hidden difference the author ignored, present a counter-example, or show the author confused correlation with causation.
Rule out an alternative explanation, confirm the sample is representative, supply the missing link the argument needs, or provide an additional case that fits the author's pattern.

Assumptions and New Evidence
Because strengthen/weaken lives or dies on the assumption, you need a reliable way to surface it. Two tools do most of the work: the negation test and the distinction between necessary and sufficient assumptions.
The negation test
Take a candidate assumption and negate it. If the argument collapses once the assumption is false, it was a genuine assumption — and the answer that states its negation is your strongest weakener.
Something that must be true for the conclusion to hold. Deny it and the argument breaks. These are the assumptions a weakener attacks. Example: "The survey respondents are representative of the whole population" is usually a necessary assumption of any survey-based claim.
Something that, if added, would guarantee the conclusion but is not strictly required. These are the classic strengtheners — they fill the gap the author left open. Distinguishing "required" from "would help" prevents over-strong answers.
Beyond-the-text stems often begin "Suppose it were discovered that…" and then give a fact absent from the passage. Do not re-read the passage for it — instead ask only how that new fact interacts with the author's conclusion.
Worked example — find the assumption
Passage claim: "Museum attendance rose the year after admission was made free, so free admission drives attendance." Assumption: nothing else changed that year that could explain the rise. Weakener: "A blockbuster exhibition opened the same year." Strengthener: "Attendance was flat at comparable paid museums that year."
Evaluating Evidence Quality
Whether new information strengthens or weakens also depends on how good the evidence is. CARS rewards readers who can grade the quality of support an author (or an answer choice) leans on.

A conclusion about a whole group is only as good as the sample it came from. New information that shows the sample was skewed (e.g., only volunteers, only one region) is a powerful weakener.
Authors often argue "case A is like case B, so what holds for A holds for B." Point out a relevant difference between A and B and the analogy — and the conclusion resting on it — weakens sharply.

Q1. An author argues: "Cities that added bike lanes saw fewer traffic deaths, so bike lanes make streets safer." Which finding would most weaken this argument?
The argument assumes nothing else explains the drop in deaths. A simultaneous speed-limit cut is an alternative cause — it offers a rival explanation for the very evidence the author uses, breaking the evidence-to-conclusion link. Cost and driver opinion are true-but-irrelevant to whether the streets got safer.
Q2. A passage claims a new teaching method raised test scores, citing one enthusiastic school that adopted it. Which finding would most strengthen the claim?
The weak spot is the single, self-selected school — an unrepresentative sample. Showing the effect holds across many varied schools directly shores up the assumption that the result generalises. Popularity and publisher endorsement are not evidence of effectiveness.
Q3. An author concludes that a medieval poet must have travelled abroad because his verse describes foreign cities vividly. This argument depends on which assumption?
The leap from "describes vividly" to "must have travelled" needs the bridge that vividness requires firsthand visits. Negate it — "a poet can describe a city vividly from others' accounts" — and the argument collapses, which is exactly the test for a necessary assumption.
Q4. A critic argues that because a rival novel and a classic both feature an orphan hero, the newer novel is derivative. Which point most weakens the critic's analogy?
The analogy assumes a shared orphan hero signals borrowing. Showing the motif is a common, independent convention breaks the relevant link between the two works — the similarity no longer points to derivation. Admiration and length do not address the logic of the comparison.
Q5. An essay claims that reading fiction increases empathy, citing a study in which frequent fiction readers scored higher on an empathy test. Which finding would most weaken the causal claim?
This is reverse causation: if empathy drives the choice to read fiction rather than the other way around, the correlation stands but the author's causal arrow is wrong. Introducing that rival direction is the sharpest weakener; the other choices leave the cause-effect claim untouched.
