Cognition, Consciousness and Language
This chapter covers how we think, solve problems, and use language, plus the varying states of awareness. Cognition and Problem Solving
Problem solving uses algorithms (step-by-step methods guaranteeing a solution) and heuristics (mental shortcuts, faster but error-prone). Key heuristics and biases (Tversky & Kahneman):
- Availability heuristic
- Judging likelihood by how easily examples come to mind (fearing plane crashes after news coverage).
- Representativeness heuristic
- Judging probability by resemblance to a prototype, ignoring base rates.
- Confirmation bias
- Seeking information that confirms existing beliefs.
- Belief perseverance
- Clinging to beliefs despite disconfirming evidence.
- Fixation / functional fixedness
- Inability to see a problem from a new angle or use an object in a novel way.
Intelligence theories include Spearman’s general factor (g), Gardner’s multiple intelligences, and Sternberg’s triarchic theory (analytical, creative, practical). Piaget’s cognitive development stages: sensorimotor (object permanence), preoperational (egocentrism, no conservation), concrete operational (conservation, logic on concrete objects), and formal operational (abstract reasoning).
Consciousness and Sleep
Consciousness is awareness of ourselves and our environment. Sleep follows a ~90-minute cycle measured by EEG:

Psychoactive drugs: depressants (alcohol, benzodiazepines — slow CNS), stimulants (cocaine, amphetamines, caffeine — increase dopamine/norepinephrine), opiates/opioids (heroin, morphine — bind endorphin receptors), and hallucinogens (LSD, marijuana — distort perception).
Language
Language components: phonemes (smallest sound units), morphemes (smallest meaning units), semantics (meaning), syntax (grammar rules) and pragmatics (social context). Acquisition proceeds through babbling, one-word, two-word (telegraphic), and full speech stages.
- Nativist (Chomsky) — an innate language acquisition device (LAD) and universal grammar; a critical period exists.
- Learning/behaviorist (Skinner) — language learned through reinforcement and imitation.
- Interactionist — biological and social factors interact.
- Whorfian (linguistic relativity) hypothesis — language shapes thought and perception.
Brain regions: Broca’s area (frontal, speech production — damage causes non-fluent aphasia) and Wernicke’s area (temporal, comprehension — damage causes fluent but meaningless speech).
