Motivation, Emotion and Stress
Motivation drives goal-directed behavior; emotion is the subjective, physiological and behavioral response to stimuli; stress is the response to challenges that tax our resources. The AAMC outline tests the classic theories of motivation and emotion side by side, so knowing the distinctions between the competing models is essential.
Theories of Motivation
- Instinct theory
- Behavior is driven by innate, fixed patterns.
- Drive-reduction theory
- Physiological needs create internal tension (drives) that we act to reduce, maintaining homeostasis.
- Arousal theory
- We seek an optimal level of arousal. The Yerkes–Dodson law states performance peaks at moderate arousal — too little or too much impairs it (and the optimum is lower for hard tasks).
- Incentive theory
- External rewards (incentives) pull behavior, not just internal drives.
- Self-determination theory
- Three innate needs: autonomy, competence, relatedness. Distinguishes intrinsic vs extrinsic motivation.
From base to peak: physiological → safety → love/belonging → esteem → self-actualization. Lower needs must generally be met before higher ones motivate behavior. Later versions add self-transcendence at the top.
Theories of Emotion
Emotion has three components: physiological arousal, behavioral expression, and cognitive appraisal. The competing theories differ on the order of these components.

The limbic system mediates emotion: the amygdala processes fear and threat, the hypothalamus drives autonomic responses, and the prefrontal cortex regulates emotion. The sympathetic nervous system produces the fight-or-flight response.
Stress and Coping
Stressors are appraised as harm/loss, threat, or challenge (Lazarus’s primary appraisal), followed by secondary appraisal of coping resources. Hans Selye’s General Adaptation Syndrome (GAS) has three stages:
- Alarm — the fight-or-flight response activates; sympathetic arousal and cortisol release.
- Resistance — the body copes with continued stress; arousal stays elevated.
- Exhaustion — resources deplete; vulnerability to illness rises.
Chronic stress activates the HPA axis (hypothalamus → pituitary → adrenal cortex → cortisol), raising cardiovascular and immune risk. Coping is problem-focused (addressing the stressor) or emotion-focused (managing the emotional response). Social support buffers stress effects.
